Deutsche Lufthansa AG said yesterday it will begin a service between Busan and Munich from March 27 next year to meet increasing travel demand between the two countries.

Lufthansa, which currently operates daily flights between Incheon and Frankfurt, will be the first European carrier to fly directly to and from Busan and the first airline ever to fly between two cities in Korea and two in its home country.

"We see enough demand for a new route as our average load factor on the Incheon-Frankfurt flights is 86 percent, our tickets are always sold out during the busy seasons and Korean businesses are expanding in Eastern Europe," Lufthansa chairman Wolfgang Mayrhuber said during a press conference Tuesday evening in Seoul.

"For some time, the flights from Busan will stop over in Seoul before flying to Munich."

The second biggest airline in Europe plans to operate a 221-passenger Airbus 340-300 flight three times a week between Busan and Munich.
