The government plans to build a pier to accommodate three containerships simultaneously at the new port in Busan with private funds.
The Ministry of Maritime Affairs and Fisheries on Wednesday (Nov. 8) announced that it is accepting proposals to build the 1,050-meter pier for three 50,000-ton containerships on the 630,000-square-meter lot.
The project would not guarantee the builder operating profit after the terminal's construction, and the government's spending would be reduced as much as possible by closely assessing requests for treasury support, a ministry official said.
When the project is completed, Busan will have 25 of the planned 30 berths for containerships at the new port area. That would bring the total number of berths in Busan to 46.
