Stop Congestion at This Year’s Busan Fireworks Festival

With the second installment of the Busan Fireworks Festival ahead, the city will advance the time by 30 minutes and restrict vehicles in stages to avoid terribly crowded conditions like last year. In addition, movies will be presented after the festival to induce people to return home gradually.

Busan city and the Organizing Committee of the Busan Culture and Tourism Festival announced on October 26 the contents of the event and plans for traffic control at Gwangalli beach, where the fireworks will be exhibited for an hour starting from 8 pm on November 10.

The city predicts that over one million people will gather around the area, like Gwangalli beach holding about 400,000, Geumnyeonsan youth training center, Bongsudae at Hwanggnyeongsan(Mountain), the breakwater in front of Samik Beach Town Apartments, and the waterside park in Suyeong-gu. The city has prepared plans for traffic control.

First of all, hours for the subway will be extended to 1:48 am, which is an additional 63 minutes than what it was, 12:45 am, at Hopo station. What is more, a total of 190 rounds will be operated, including forty rounds on the first line, eighty on the second line and seventy on the third, and waiting times will be shortened. To stop congestion in the stations, temporary ticket boxes will be built.

With the local bus system, some nineteen vehicles will be placed on the routes heading to the event area and fifty shuttle buses will be running between Gwangan subway station and Beomil-dong station.

Traffic control by stages will be in action from the morning of the day around the event area. Accordingly, the first stage on the coastal road will be limited from 10 am, the second stage on the inside one-way road between the coastal road and Gwang-nam road from 4 pm and the third stage on Gwang-nam road will be completely controlled from 6 pm.

Gwangan Grand bridge will have no cars starting from 7:30 am and the upper roadway opens at 12 am and the lower opens 10pm. To install fireworks, part of the upper roadway will be closed from November 6 to November 11 at 6 am.

To prevent spectators crowding into subway stations immediately after the festival, a 500 inch screen will be set up at an outdoor stage on the beach in front of the Millak raw fish center where the movie ‘Welcome to Dong-mak-gol’ will be presented.

Other than that, approximately 1,000 safety management agents from Busan city, the Busan Transportation Corporation and police will standby at subway stops and the event area, along with three fire engines, eleven security vessels and eighteen ambulances that will be mobilized.

The title of this year’s festival is ‘Dynamic Wave’ which offers an image of Busan approaching the world. The fireworks show will be presented for 45 minutes after a preliminary ceremony for opening the event. The show is divided into five smaller themes: Peaceful Songs, Into the Memories, Love Story, Dynamic Busan, and Dream of Busan.
