The Military Manpower Administration will hold an introductory session on military service affairs for overseas Koreans at the Busan Exhibition and Convention Center (BEXCO) in Busan from Oct. 31-Nov. 2.
The event has been arranged for overseas Koreans on the occasion of the fifth World Korean Business Convention (Hansang) to be held during the same period at the same venue, an administration official said.
“We plan to provide a variety of consultations tailored for demands of second- and third-generation Koreans overseas involving mandatory enrollment in military service,” said the official said.
Overseas Koreans with permanent residency are to be prevented from departing Korea and will be obligated to serve military duty if they stay here for six months or more, in accordance with the law.
Currently, there are as many as 89,000 overseas Korean residents at the age for obligatory military service _ between 18 years to 35 years _ according to the statistics of the administration.
