Busan and the Japanese city of Fukuoka will open a "Friendship Year" by conducting various programs to celebrate the 20th anniversary of their administrative exchange. They will cement the two-decade-long friendship by holding 30 commemorative projects.

As an opener, the city will hold the "ceremony to commemorate the 'Busan-Fukuoka Friendship Year'" at Busan Cultural Center on Feb. 2 with the attendance of about 1,000 dignitaries representing the administrative, business and cultural sectors of the two cities, including Mayor Hur Nam-sik and Fukuoka Mayor Hiroshi Yoshida. The two cities will also hold various exchange events throughout the year.

In March, they will hold friendship badminton matches between city officials, followed by commemorative tree planting, flower seedling cultivation and working-group meeting of the greater-sphere economic cooperation council.
