Busan City reported that a ceremony celebrating the completion of the second-phase expansion of the International Passenger Terminal of Gimhae International Airport (2nd fl, waiting room) would be held at 4:30 p.m. on 31 October with the participation of about 800 people including government officials, city council members, relevant project officials, and local residents.

The construction of the second-phase expansion of Gimhae International Airport started in March 1997 to enhance its air transportation capacity and to provide more convenience for air passengers and is completed on 25 October this year. A total construction cost amounts to 397.3 billion won.

The international passenger and cargo terminal and auxiliary facilities such as a parking lot were constructed in turn, followed by the expansion and reinforcement of taxiway, the establishment of the safety zone, and the set-up of the interchange access road.

The expansion of the international passenger terminal will be able to handle 4.63 million passengers and 168,000 tons of cargo per year, an increase from the current 1.66 million passengers and 69,000 tons respectively. The parking capacity is expected to increase from 2,272 to 3,692 vehicles as well.

International air passengers had to use the international cargo terminal as a temporary international passenger terminal since 2002. This has been somewhat of an inconvenience to the passengers. However, as the expansion of the international terminal is completed, international air passengers will be able to get a much more comfortable and convenient service.

In addition, this expansion is expected to meet the increasing demand for international air service, bring vitality to Gimhae International Airport, keep up with the growing demand caused by the development of West Busan area, and contribute to the local economy, said an official of Busan city government.
