Hand-held device offers tour guides in four languages

Busan has opened an era of “U(Ubiquitous)-Tour,” in which visitors can make hotel and restaurant reservations as well as tour the city with just a portable Internet appliance.

The city has recently completed tourist information booths at major spots including Gimhae International Airport, Busan Station, International Passenger Terminal and Haeundae Beach, with 300 “U-Tour Guide” devices for lending to tourists free of charge.

The appliance provides information on the nearest tourist attractions, restaurants and hotels to users in real time and in four languages - Korean, English, Chinese and Japanese - using a global positioning system. It also offers maps, road navigation and major promenades.

Using the device, tourists can confirm vacancies at hotels and restaurants and easily make reservations at any time, and in any place. All visitors to Busan can borrow “U-Tour Guide” devices by presenting ID and return them later.

The city also operates a ”Mobile 251” service, which enables visitors to access various tourist information via cell phone without borrowing the Internet devices. Visitors have only to press “251” and then one of the Internet buttons - NATE, Magic N and Ez-I - to access information on nearby attractions, eateries and lodging facilities.
