A new English FM radio station will be launched in February 2009 in Busan region. The Busan English Broadcasting Foundation (CEO Ahn Joon-tae, Deputy Mayor of Administrative Affairs) received approval as a new English FM broadcaster by Korea Communications Commission (KCC) on December 3rd.
Busan English Broadcasting, on FM 90.5MHz, will be on air from 5 a.m. to 2 p.m. for 21 hours a day – scheduling 4 hours 34 minutes of regional programs and 16 hours 26 minutes of network broadcasting.
Busan City applied for approval to the KCC on September 19 and the KCC has proposed 8 conditions to its granting approval, considering the characteristics of English-only broadcasting, including keeping the foreign members’ ratio of the audience committee at a minimum of 30 percent and providing a broadcasting manual for foreigners.
To prepare for the official launch of the English broadcasting station next February, the Busan English Broadcasting Foundation is currently busy with preparing the necessary hardware and recruitment. In addition, in September Busan City signed contracts with KNN, a private regional broadcaster, Korea International Broadcasting Foundation and TBS (which stands for Traffic Broadcasting System), which will be its ‘sister’ station based in the Seoul region.
