In response to sky-rocketing oil prices throughout the world, Busan City has announced a ‘Comprehensive Plan for Implementing Bicycle Facilities’ along with 7 designated model areas for bike paths to encourage environmental-friendly transport, through increased bicycle usage, in order to save energy, protect the environment and ease congestion.

Among the 7 designated areas, a 2 kilometer bicycle path between the LG Metro apartment complex and Kyungsung Univ. / Pukyong Nat’l Univ. Subway Station (Line 2) will be the first project with a 5 billion won investment. This project started in September and will be completed in the first half of the next year.

By 2011, the bicycle network will be extended to 6 other designated areas including a bike path from Sinpyeong Subway Station to Sinpyeong-Jangnim Industrial Complex (3.4 kilometer long and 2 ~ 2.5 meter wide).

With a total investment of 19 billion won, altogether 104 kilometers of new bike lanes will be built in 10 districts including Suyeong-gu and Sasang-gu.

For bicycle commuters, the bike lanes between the Suyeong River and Oncheoncheon Stream will be connected. Starting in October, new bike lanes connecting Allak Bridge, the confluence area of the Suyeong River and Oncheoncheon Stream, and the lower Suyeong River will be built in the first half of next year.

Also, as part of a comprehensive Suyeong River improvement plan, a 1.95 kilometer bike lane will be built between Wondong Interchange and Suyeong Bridge No. 1, and between Centum e-Pyeonhansesang Apartment and Naru Park.
