Fervor in Busan soars buoyed by success in Beijing Games

The Korean people's desire to host the '2020 Summer Olympics' in Busan is high. There has been a flooding of desire among the Korean people to host the Summer Olympics in Busan based on the unprecedented achievement of Republic of Korea in the 2008 Beijing Olympics which ended Aug. 24.

A native of Busan, Prof. Moon Daesung, 32, taekwondo gold medallist in the previous Athens Olympics, who was elected to the 19-member Athletes' Commission of the International Olympic Committee or IOC, is believed to be a great boost in Busan's bid to host the Olympics in 2020.

Another desirable sign is that a large number of sports leaders have applied to attend an IOC forum slated for September in Busan.

"Korea has produced an IOC member from Busan plus the Olympic Games ranking of 7th place. In this elated atmosphere, we are sure to win the rights to host the Summer Olympics in Busan," said Busan Mayor Hur Nam-sik. The environment for hosting the Olympics has been ripening and Busan is confident in working out its bidding strategy.

First of all, the people's desire for the Olympics is escalating. There has been a series of prevailing opinions that "It is highly probable for Busan to win the bid to host the Olympics" as Seoul was successful in 1988.

A series of international events will be held this month in Busan, such as the 6th World forum on Sports, Culture and Education, the conference of the Commission for Culture and Education of the IOC Culture Olympics, and the TreX-Games Busan 2008. An estimated 1,000 sports leaders from 150 countries, including IOC Chairman Jacques Rogge and some 40 other IOC members, will attend the events.

Busan is determined to use the events as the opportunity to launch its efforts to win the rights to host the Olympics.
