The government has finalized a basic plan for constructing a high-speed railway linking Seoul and the southwestern port city of Mokpo by 2017.
The Construction and Transportation Ministry will put ten-point-five trillion won into building the "Honam Railway.”
The new railway will use the existing Seoul-Busan high-speed railway as far as Osong in Chungcheongbuk-do, and branch out to Mokpo on a two hundred-31-kilometer route.
The railway will shorten travel time from Seoul to Mokpo to a hundred-six minutes from the current time of nearly three hours.
The government also finalized on Wednesday a blueprint for the second phase construction of the "Gyeongbu Railway” linking Seoul with Busan. A stop at Ulsan will be added while a surface railway will pass through Daejon and Daegu.
The changes have slightly extended the route from Seoul to the southern port city to some four-hundred-19 kilometers and the travel time to a hundred-30 minutes. The project will cost a total of seven-point-two trillion won.
A ministry official says that by 2017, the entire nation will be reachable in half a day of travel.
