The
opening of the 'Halal Seafood Technical Support Center' on March 26 is expected
to have a very positive impact on efforts by the domestic seafood industry to
enter the Islamic seafood market.
The
National Fisheries Research & Development Institute officially opened the
'Halal Seafood Technical Support Center' at the Biological Engineering Research
Laboratory in Gijang, Busan on March 26. Although the size of the total Muslim
population is vast, at some 1.8 billion people, there are only about 300 Halal certified
authorities in Korea and abroad.
'Halal' means 'permissible' in Arabic and true to the teachings of Islamic scriptures. Halal food must be certified by a licensed authority, and the 'Halal Seafood Technical Support Center' will provide information related to Halal certification and Halal seafood R&D, as well as certification standards from country to country and from item to item, as well as guidelines for the production and processing of seafood.
