The Bank of Korea (BOK) will issue coins to commemorate the summit of the Asia Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) forum slated for Nov. 18-19 in Busan, the second largest city on the southeastern coast of the Korean Peninsula.
The central bank’s monetary policy committee Thursday (July 7) resolved to issue the coin on Nov. 14 at the request of the Office for APEC 2005.
This will be the second time this year that the central bank will mint commemorative coins, following the one to be issed on Aug. 12 to commemorate the 60th anniversary of the liberation from Japanese colonial rule, which falls on Aug. 15.
The silver coin is 3.5 centimeters in diameter and weighs 20.7 grams.
One side of the coin will feature the image of "Nurimaru APEC house,” which the government is building for the summit on Dongbaek islet off Busan. The other side of the coin will have a sea wave and the official summit emblem.
Up to 100,000 of the coins will be issued, including 10,000 overseas.
The bank will sell the coin for 20,000 won ($19) plus sales tax.
It will receive orders for the coins via branches of the National Agricultural Cooperatives Federation (NACF) and Woori Bank from Aug. 17 to 26.
