'The year of economic renaissance'
Gangseo canal logistics city to make Busan more business-friendly

Busan is geared up to bring in an “economic renaissance" to the city this year.

In an aim to boost the local economy amid a rapidly changing economic environment in and outside the nation, the city has chosen the renaissance theme as the year's motto.

"The revival of the Busan economy" has been set as the top priority by Busan Mayor Hur Nam-sik. He also picked the municipal slogan "The year of economic renaissance through innovation and open-door policy." The motto represents Busan's determination to develop its economy based on economic strengths and opportunities the city can offer. In order to achieve this goal, Busan plans to make the best of the promises made by the new government.

In a recent press conference, Mayor Hur laid out the “10 visions for Busan‘s economic renaissance." By selecting the city's 10 most important projects, the mayor said that the city aims to concentrate its efforts and attract the central government's support to achieve the proposed goals.

Of the planned visions, the top priority goes to the construction of a cutting-edge canal logistics city in the Gangseo District.

Busan plans to create a knowledge-based canal city, a composite logistics complex, and a southeastern satellite industrial complex in the area. The city aims to realize this plan through active collaboration with the new government, as President-elect Lee Myung-bak backed the idea during his campaign. Also included are the construction of the southern international hub airport and a hub harbor. The two facilities are essential to establish Busan as a global city and a world-renowned marine capital. The redevelopment of the North Port and the construction of the underground KTX and Busan Citizen's Park are some of the visions that could drastically transform the city.

The list also includes the development of the Film Digital Town, a tourism-convention cluster, and the Munhyeon Finance Complex. The city will also work on expanding highway networks and try to host the 2020 Summer Olympics.
