80,000 super-sized firecrackers to adorn 45-minute feast

Busan Fireworks Festival, one of the biggest culture-tourism products representing this city, will present a more splendid and magnificent feast of fireworks this year than ever before.

The city recently held a press conference on how programs and production plans for the annual festivity are going, presided over by Mayor Hur Nam-sik.

City officials plan to promote the event as a world-class fireworks festival to attract as many foreign tourists as possible. This year's theme is the "Fireworks festival - a new possibility of Hallyu" or Korean culture boom. It will be held in Gwangalli Beach in Oct. 17-18.

■ Celebration on the eve: Busan City will hold the "Fireworks of Hope" event with the participation of citizens as well as offer fireworks by invited teams from abroad, from 7:30 p.m. to 9:10 p.m. on Oct. 17.

The "Fireworks of Hope" is a new entry this year, which introduces special stories of selected citizens and offers wireworks matching them. The city plans to accept citizens' stories via its Web page and through the special events of TV and radio stations. Spectators will also be able to enjoy shows by a team from Shanghai, China, which has sisterhood ties with Busan.

■ Main event: Various programs, including citizen-participating events, the KBS Open Concert, state-of-the art fireworks show and film screening, will be offered from 3 p.m. to 11 p.m. on Oct. 18.

Cheerleaders of Busan-franchised pro baseball team Lotte Giants will provide a celebratory performance, followed by a "cospre" - costume play (of comics characters) - parade on the Gwangalli boardwalk and seaside stage.

The fireworks, the highlight of the festival, will start at 8:05 p.m. amid the countdown of 1.5 million spectators. About 80,000 large fireworks will adorn the sky and sea. Busan City is planning to increase the number of large, 16-inch fireworks from 20 to 30 this year to produce a more grandiose and magnificent show.

The highlight seems to be the 25-inch fireworks called "Presidential Fireworks" as well as the "Niagara Fireworks," which will produce a cascading effect of firecrackers over the 1-kilometer span of Gwangan Grand Bridge.
