Nation's largest seaside resort sets up 5 km-wide 'Free Internet Zone'

Visitors to the Haeundae Beach are now able to conduct various businesses, such as stock trading and email searches, by connecting their laptops to wireless Internet service, while sitting on a seaside bench and enjoying the waves.

 

Busan City has completed the establishment of a "Free Internet Zone" around the Haeundae Beach.

 

The city invested 200 million won ($200,000) to set up wireless Internet equipment at 21 places around the beach, enabling visitors with wireless enabled laptops to enjoy free Internet services within 5 kilometers range, including the beach, seaside roads and subway stations. About 500 people can simultaneously access the broadband Internet of 1 Mbps.

 

Earlier, Busan applied for and won approval of its "Fun-Beach Tour Haeundae Project" in response to the "UCity Test Bed Establishment Project" of the Ministry of Communication and Information.

 

The city plans to add Busan City Hall, BEXCO and other beaches to its free Internet service zone projects for the convenience of numerous Korean and foreign visitors frequenting these places.

"We will keep expanding the free Internet service zones in major locations of Busan to enhance our co mpetitiveness as the global city of tourism, exhibition and convention," a city official said. "The city also plans to make the most of its Internet networks for transportation, prevention-disaster, environment and other U-City projects to provide upgraded services for citizens," he added.
