Republic of Korea is putting final touches on its prepartions for hosting of the 14th ILO Asian Regional Meeting scheduled for Aug. 29-Sept. 1 at the Busan Exhibition and Convention Center (BEXCO) in the southeastern port city of Busan.

Labor Minister Lee Sang-soo presided over an organizing committee meeting on Aug. 7 to gather opinions on preparation for the event.

He called on the organizing committee to do its best to successfully host the International Labor Organization (ILO) meeting. The committee is composed of representatives of labor unions, government officials, academics and others.

Minister Lee said the government is asking for close cooperation from the labor unions, businesses and relevant institutions to make the gathering a success and thereby enhance Korea's image in the international arena with the advancement of labor relations.

The Ministry of Labor held a meeting of foreign diplomats in Korea to brief them on the preparations, asking for their cooperation for the successful hosting of the meeting.

The meeting will focus on the role of productive employment in people-centered development.

The overall theme of the gathering is "Realizing Decent Work in Asia." The concept of decent work encompasses employment creation and enterprise promotion, social protection, rights at work and social dialogue.

The meeting is also designed to identify the opportunities and challenges for realizing decent work as the main pathway out of poverty and for creating a more productive and equitable society in Asia.
