Foreign students up 20-fold

A growing number of foreign students have been rushing to Busan to study in recent years with their population rising nearly 20 times over the past seven years.

 

The tally compiled by the city shows a total of 4,309 college students from 43 countries, including China, attend schools here as of the end of April, up 34 percent from a year earlier and nearly 20 times the 222 students in 2001. The foreign student population sharply grew to 1,753 in 2004, to 2,436 in 2006 and to 3,214 in 2007.

 

China topped the list of 43 countries with an 82 percent stake or 3,540 students, followed by Vietnam with 113 students, Japan with 98, Indonesia 80, Taiwan 70 and Mongolia 52.

 

Also included in the list are 45 Russians, 33 Indians, 29 Turks, 24 Uzbekistanis, 20 Americans, 11 Germans and nine Kenyans.
