Casinos will be allowed at hotels to jumpstart tourism industry

Two major tourist attractions in Jung-gu District - Mt. Yongdu Park and Jagalchi Market - and their surrounding area have been turned into a special tourism zone.

Last month, Busan City designated and declared the entire area of Bupyeong-dong, Gwangbok-dong and Nampo-dong in Jung-gu District, plus the 1.4-square kilometer area including parts of Jungang-dong, Donggwangdong, Daecheong-dong and Bosudong, as Mt. Yongdu-Jagalchi Special Tourism Zone.

The special zone accounts for 37 percent of the Jung-gu District.

The area comprises not only Mt. Yongdu Park and Jagalchi Market but also such other attractions such as Kukje Market, the Pusan International Film Festival or PIFF Plaza, the International Ferry Terminal, 40-Stairs Theme Street, and the Busan Modern History Museum.

Regulations on construction will be relaxed in these zones, allowing a higher building-to-land ratio for those who offer their land as sites for public facilities. It will also become easier to apply for the government's tourism promotion and development funds, enabling developers to attain bank loans 20 percent more than the credit ceiling when they build, remodel or repair hotels.

These businesses will face no restrictions in installing advertising facilities. Tourist hotels will be able to build and run casino facilities.
