Globally renowned marine engine manufacturer to expand investment in Busan.

Wärtsilä, the Finnish manufacturer of diesel engines, will significantly increase investment and employment at its office and workshop in Busan by next year.


According to Busan Metropolitan City, Wärtsilä Korea Ltd., a fully-owned subsidiary of Wärtsilä Corporation in Finland, is scheduled to open a high-tech office building, with a total floor area of 17,000 square meters, at Eomgung-dong, Sasang-gu District this coming August. This building will be utilized as a training center, providing training programs related to shipping technology, and a service office for the company’s products.


For the construction of the office building, the company is investing a total of 8.2 billion won, including 6.2 billion won this year and 2 billion won next year, and is hiring 120 people between now and the end of the year. Wärtsilä Korea was established by the investment of Wärtsilä Corporation and it relocated its head office to Busan in 2002.


Presently, Wärtsilä in Korea runs workshops and storage facilities at Noksan Industrial Complex in Gangseo-gu and Gisa Science Industry Complex with a total of 310 employees and annual sales of the Wärtsilä in Korea reach 40 billion won. 


Hur Nam-sik, Busan City Mayor and Mr. Ole Johansson, the president and CEO of the company met on June 7 at the Westin Chosun Hotel, in Haeundae, and discussed the expansion of investment in Wärtsilä’s head office in Busan as well as the creation of new jobs. The two will sign a memorandum of understanding on investment and support at ‘The Investment Seminar of Busan City’ on July 3 in Seoul.
