The biggest island of Busan, Gadeokdo Island, has now been connected to the mainland.

The 964 meter-long and 8 meter-wide road connecting Seonchang Village in Gadeokdo Island, Gangseo-gu and the temporary dock at Busan New Port, opened on May 16.

Gangseo-gu District held an event to celebrate the temporary opening of the road in the interests of Gadeokdo residents’ safety.

Approximately 3,000 people reside in Gadeokdo, Busan’s biggest island, which at 20.96 is 1.6 times bigger than Yeongdo Island.

The Ministry of Land, Transport and Maritime Affairs started construction in October 2003 with investing 20 billion won for the Gadeokdo residents, who have suffered from noises and dusts caused by the construction of Busan New Port.

In the interests of Gadeokdo’s residents and for reasons of safety during the construction of Busan New Port, only Gadeokdo residents can drive along the road. Walking along the road is prohibited to both residents and non-residents, while trucks or automobiles owned by non-residents and tourism-related vehicles are also prohibited from using the road.

From November 2008, the road will be opened to all vehicles.
