Major buildings in downtown Busan are to become increasingly covered with morning glories.

To improve the city environment, Busan City government is collaborating with Fukuoka City in Japan on planting morning glories on buildings’ walls and fences. A morning glory seed-sowing event was held at Busan City Hall on May 22.

Deputy Mayor for Administrative Affairs, Ahn Joon-tae, and Fukuoka Deputy Mayor, Takada Hiroyuki, joined Busan’s citizens in planting morning glories. Fukuoka City, which proposed the “Morning Glory-covered Building” project, donated the morning glory seeds to Busan City.

Through this project, the city plans to cut its energy costs by reducing the indoor temperature while providing a more pleasant environment to visitors of the City Hall.

Furthermore, the city plans to expand this project to other public and private buildings in Busan.

Fukuoka City started the ‘Morning Glory-covered Building’ project in 2006 and has reported significant energy savings as a result.
