To support the medical costs of “neglected neighbors” such as foreign workers, Busan City has devised a new system to help out with medical expenses.

Those who are eligible to receive the new form of financial assistance include: foreign workers and their children; foreign wives who have not yet gained Korean citizenship and their offspring; refugees who have been formally recognized as such, or those who have applied for refugee status; and the homeless who are unable to receive medical benefits under the current medical care system.

Most of their medical treatment expenses, from admission through surgery, will be covered – but there is a cut-off point of 5 million won ($4,529). There is no limit on the number of times they may receive assistance per year.

Please note that many outpatient treatments are not eligible for assistance.

Those who wish to receive a health check-up should visit the Busan Medical Center or Pusan National University Hospital.
