Busan Museum of Art announced that it will open ‘Space Lee Ufan’ as an annex to the Busan Museum of Art on April 10, 2015.

It will be housed in a two story building with one level underground and occupy a total area of 1,400 square meters.

About 20 of Lee’s works, from his early pieces in the 60s to his most recent from 2015, will be displayed on the first and second floors as well as outside of the building.

Many of his sculptures including “Relatum” will be shown on the first floor, while such paintings as “Dialogu”, “From Point”, “From Line”, “From Winds” will be displayed on the second, with installation works being shown outside.

Although original plans to build a “Lee Ufan Art Gallery” in Busan Citizens Park fell through, continuous efforts by both the city and citizens resulted in Lee reaching an agreement to establish his gallery on July 15, 2013.

Mr. Lee showed great enthusiasm throughout the project, visiting the construction site three times to oversee construction and the installation of his artworks.

The opening ceremony of ‘Space of Lee Ufan’ will be held at the Busan Museum of Art on April 10, 2015 at 3PM.

Lee Ufan was born in 1936 in Korea, and studied painting at the College of Fine Arts at Seoul National University for just two months before moving to Yokohama, Japan in 1956, where he earned a degree in philosophy in 1961. He led the Mono-ha movement and has had solo and group exhibitions at major art museums and galleries around the world and including The Royal Museum of Fine Arts of Belgium, Brussels; Alte Nationalgalerie, Berlin; Centre Georges-Pompidou, Paris.

Lee Ufan: Marking Infinity was held at the Guggenheim Museum in 2011, and he was a guest artist at the Château de Versailles in 2014.

Space Lee Ufan is the second art museum dedicated to the artist, with the first being the Lee Ufan Museum (est. 2010) in Naoshima, Japan.
