Smoking is to be prohibited on Songjeong Beach.

Following the noticeable improvements in air quality and the cleanliness of Haeundae Beach and Dongbaek Island, as a direct result of their being designated as no-smoking zones last June, Haeundae-gu District has decided to expand the no-smoking zone to Songjeong Beach from July this year.

Songjeong Beach and Jukdo Park (with a total area of 72,000) will be jointly designated as a non-smoking zone, while the beach road will be considered as a no-smoking zone after a trial run.

Haeundae-gu District Office conducted a survey of the opinions of some 700 residents regarding the implementation of the non-smoking zone in Haeundae Beach and Dongbaek Island. Results showed a 78 percent satisfaction rate, while the volume of waste decreased by 30 percent.

A Haeundae-gu District official said that the number of smokers has decreased markedly after the designation of the non-smoking zone. The District plans to enact the “Ordinance on the establishment of a non-smoking zone” to make Haeundae, a special tourism district, more pleasant for visitors and residents alike.
