The annual National Car-free Day event will take place on Thursday, September 22, 2011 from 6 a.m. through 6 p.m. all over Busan.

The City intends to encourage public transportation and bicycle usage in order to tackle problems caused by driving private cars such as air pollution, traffic congestion and excessive energy consumption, and to reduce the consumption of fossil fuels in response to climate change.

To promote the event, all city workers from public agencies and private companies will be encouraged to use public transport. Parking lots at the City Hall and at all public agencies will be closed temporarily as an additional encouragement for workers to use public transport.

The World Car-free Day event started in France in 1997 as an effort by citizens to reduce traffic volumes and improve the environment. It has now been adopted by 2,100 cities in 40 countries around the world. Busan City has joined the event since 2008 to raise citizens’ awareness of issues such as air pollution from automobiles, traffic congestion and energy wasting.
