World Team Table Tennis Championships Finals

□ The city of Busan has announced that the World Team Table Tennis Championships Finals Busan 2024, the world’s most prestigious table tennis championships, will be held in Haeundae at BEXCO from February 16 to February 25, 2024.

○ The Championships have been held 65 times since the inaugural event in London, UK in 1926.

○ The event is being hosted by the ITTF (International Table Tennis Federation) and sponsored by the Organizing Committee of the Champions Finals Busan. Approximately 2,000 table tennis athletes from 47 countries are scheduled to participate in this year’s event.

□ This is the first time that Korea, a table tennis powerhouse, will host the event.

○ Although Busan succeeded in attracting the Championships Finals in 2020, they were cancelled due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The city made a successful new bid to host the 2024 Championships Finals.

○ In November 2021, Busan was confirmed as the venue for the event at the ITTF Annual General Meeting in Houston.

□ The event will feature men’s and women’s group competitions under the slogan, “One Table, One World.” The Championships are also considered a bridge to the Paris Olympics, as 16 winners (eight male and eight female athletes) will qualify for the Paris 2024 Olympics.

○ Male and female athletes from 40 countries will be divided into eight groups (five countries in each group) to compete in the qualifying round. The top three ranking teams in each group following the qualifying round will compete in the elimination rounds of the tournament.

□ The opening ceremony will be held in Exhibition Center 1 at BEXCO at 4 PM on February 17th under the theme, “To Busan with a Dream.”

○ The Opening Ceremony will feature diverse performance genres, including Korean classical fusion music performances, to maximize Korea’s unique characteristics and showcase the importance of table tennis in the country. After the ceremony, a match with the Korean Team will take place.

□ The Mayor of Busan, Park Heong-joon, remarked, “Because this is the first-ever event in Korea and one that is being held in Busan, we will devote all our strength to ensure a successful Championships alongside the host and relevant institutions.” He added, “We will let the world know through the Championships that Busan is a true global sports city and a global hub city by attracting various mega sporting events.”

○ Associated events, the ITTF Summit 2024 and ITTF President's Championships for Korean Masters presented by BNK Busan Bank will be held simultaneously. Over 10,000 visitors a day are expected to visit the event venue. The city of Busan will do its best to ensure the event’s safety, including implementing infectious diseases management for cases such as measles among other illnesses.
