The Busan Green Railway in Haeundae-gu has won the 2021 Korean Landscape Architecture Award from the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport.

The Korean Landscape Architecture Award, the nation’s top award in the field of landscaping, aims to make the country beautiful, cultivate the urban environment and promote the importance of landscapes to the public by raising public and private sector concerns and investment in landscapes. The Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport and the Korean Institute of Landscape Architecture has given the award since 2001.

The Busan Green Railway in Haeundae has garnered enormous popularity from residents as a promenade walkway to reduce stress during the coronavirus pandemic.

With a total length of 9.8km, the barrier-free promenade in the city center utilizes an abandoned railway, the former Donghae Nambu Line, along the southeast coast. It runs from Haeundae Olympic Junction to Songjeong. The Green Railway is recognized as a leading case of urban regeneration.

The city of Busan invested 31.5 billion won to renovate the 9.8 km promenade from 2014 to 2020 with a walking path, exercise equipment, walking and observatory deck, benches, various flowers, plants and trees.

The city plans to continuously develop more urban forests, including the Busan Green Railway, to promote easy and close access to a carbon-neutral green city. In addition, a rest area is provided for citizens.
