2018 Busan New Year Festival 

 

To welcome in the New Year, Busan is hosting its annual New Year’s Festival, a popular winter event, celebrated by both citizens of Busan, as well as tourists visiting the city.

 

The 2018 Busan Haemaji (Sunrise) Festival - also known as the New Year’s Festival - consists of a bell-tolling ceremony and New Year’s sunrise event. The festival will start at 11 p.m. on New Year’s Eve, and continue through midnight into the morning of New Year’s Day at Yongdusan Park and Haeundae Beach, respectively.

 

Period: December 31, 2017 - January 1, 2018

Venue: Yongdusan Park, Haeundae Beach

Bell-tolling Ceremony

December 31, 2017: 11:00 p.m. - (Yongdusan Park)

Year-end music concert, bell-tolling ceremony, Busan Mayor’s New Year’s address and fireworks display

 

The bell-tolling ceremony will begin with a ten-second countdown to midnight, followed by 33 tolls of the bell to officially mark the beginning of the New Year.

Complimentary hot tea and eomuk (fish cake) will be served at service booths from 9:00 p.m. to 11:40 p.m.

 

How to get there: Nampo Station (Metro line 1), exit 7. Walk about 10 minutes and find the escalator leading to Yongdusan Park on your right.

 

New Year’s Sunrise Event

January 1, 2018: 6:40 a.m. ~ 8:00 a.m. (Haeundae Beach)

The sunrise is expected at around 7:32 a.m. on January 1, 2018.

 

Include: celebratory performances, Busan Mayor’s New Year’s address, watching the sunrise, and early morning swimming in the sea.

 

Complimentary hot coffee and tea will be provided at service booths from 6:00a.m. to 8:00 a.m.. At the beginning of every year, a sculpture symbolizing the New Year (2018 is Year of the Dog) is installed at Haeundae Beach, providing the perfect photo-taking spot for visitors wishing to mark the beginning of the New Year. It will be exhibited at the beach until January 2, 2018.

 

How to get there: Haeundae Station (Metro line 2), exits 3 or 5, Walk towards the beach
