Busan
City announced a Companion Animal Welfare and Cultural Center opened in
Yeonje-gu on November 22 after three months of test operations.
The
three-story building was built on a 366 square meter area in Geoje-dong,
Yeonje-gu. The center will not only provide assistance regarding pet adoption,
but also educate citizens and residents alike on pet etiquettes, pet behavior
consulting, and various other pet related topics.
The
number of pet raising households in Busan exceeds 15 to 16 percent of the total
number of households in Busan and is expected to grow every year. The pilot
operation began when pet-related issues started to arise, including civil
complaints against neighbors with pets, pets being released into the wild, pet
abuse or accidents. The City of Busan has decided to approach these problems by
educating pet owners and those without pets, instead of penalizing them.
The
stray animals admitted into the center will be provided with a health checkup, potty
training, behavior training, and spay and neuter surgery before their adoption
process.
