Busan City
will launch a campaign across the city to promote sustainable urban
transportation for one week from September 18 to September 22 to celebrate the
annual World Car-free Day (September 22).
The City
intends to encourage public transportation in order to tackle problems caused
by driving private cars, such as air pollution, traffic congestion and
excessive energy consumption and to reduce the consumption of fossil fuels in
response to climate change. The event’s
success will rely on citizens’ voluntary participation.
To promote
the event, all city workers from public agencies and private companies will be
encouraged to use public transport on September 20. Parking lots at City Hall
and all public agencies will be closed temporarily as an additional
encouragement for workers to use public transport on September 20. Vehicles transporting
the handicapped, pregnant women, or infants, emergency vehicles and government
vehicles will be allowed to enter the parking lots as exceptions.
