Busan Metropolitan City to Hold the “54th Parents’ Day Ceremony” Under the Theme “A Grateful Today, A Brilliant You”

Busan Metropolitan City (Acting Mayor Kim Kyung-duk) announced that it will hold the “54th Parents’ Day Ceremony” today (May 8) at 10:00 a.m. in the Grand Auditorium of City Hall.

Parents’ Day was first established in 1956 as “Mother’s Day,” but in 1973 it was renamed and officially designated as “Parents’ Day” to honor and express gratitude toward both parents. Since then, Busan Metropolitan City has held an annual commemorative ceremony for the occasion.

This year’s ceremony, marking the 54th Parents’ Day, will be held under the slogan “A Grateful Today, A Brilliant You” and will feature an awards presentation for distinguished acts of filial devotion, commemorative remarks, congratulatory speeches, and celebratory performances.

Hosted by Busan Metropolitan City and organized by the Busan Senior Welfare Center Association, the event is expected to welcome approximately 700 participants, including distinguished guests, award recipients for filial devotion, family members, and senior citizens, providing an opportunity to reflect on empathy and mutual respect between generations.

Awards from the Minister of Health and Welfare and the Mayor will be presented to four individuals who have demonstrated exemplary filial devotion by caring devotedly for their parents despite difficult circumstances and showing respect toward elders in the community, as well as to four institutions and organizations that have contributed to promoting and practicing the culture of filial piety.

The celebratory performances will include choir and dance presentations by children from the Busan Metropolitan City Hall daycare center expressing love and respect for parents, as well as traditional performances by Norigwangdae, including lion dances, large drum performances, flag performances, and small hand drum performances, helping foster a culture of respect for elders and filial devotion.

In addition, visitors will be able to view the “Intergenerational Empathy Art Exhibition” in the lobby of the Grand Auditorium on the day of the ceremony. The exhibition has been underway since May 4 in the underground passage connected to City Hall Station.

The exhibition offers an opportunity to once again reflect on the importance of family and the value of filial devotion.
