Busan Metropolitan City Signs Agreement on Operation of Yangsan Line Urban Railway: Opening Within the Year… Mayor Park Heong-joon, “Connecting Busan and Yangsan into a Single Living Area”

Busan Metropolitan City (Mayor Park Heong-joon) announced that it will sign the “Operational Agreement for the Yangsan Line Urban Railway” today (30th) at 2:00 PM at the Yangsan Line depot.

The signing ceremony will be attended by Mayor Park Heong-joon of Busan, Mayor Na Dong-yeon of Yangsan, President Lee Byeong-jin of Busan Transportation Corporation, CEO Cho Eun-je of Woojin Metro Yangsan Co., Ltd., and Executive Director Kwak Young-jin of Woojin Industrial Systems Co., Ltd., along with other related officials.

This agreement has been prepared in advance of the opening of the Yangsan Line to establish an operational cooperation system between Busan Metropolitan City and Yangsan City and to secure a stable operational foundation.

The main contents of the agreement include: ▲division of operational responsibilities for the main section of the Yangsan Line (Nopo Station–Bukjeong Station) and the connecting section of Busan Metro Line 2 (Yangsan Station–Yangsan Jungang Station) ▲establishment of standards for sharing operational costs and allocation of transportation revenue ▲application of a unified fare system identical to the Busan Metro and implementation of internal transfer operations ▲establishment of a cooperative system for safety management and enhancement of passenger convenience.

In particular, the Yangsan Line will apply the same fare system as the Busan Metro and will operate with a barrier-free direct connection structure that allows passengers to transfer without exiting the fare gates, enabling citizens to conveniently use it as if it were a single urban railway network.

Under this agreement, Yangsan City will operate the main section of the Yangsan Line, while Busan Metropolitan City will operate the connecting section of Busan Metro Line 2, thereby establishing an efficient operational system through a clear division of roles.

The Yangsan Line urban railway is a light rail line connecting Nopo Station on Busan Metro Line 1 to Bukjeong Station in Yangsan, Gyeongsangnam-do. It was constructed to establish a metropolitan public transportation network linking Busan and Yangsan and is scheduled for completion in June this year, with the goal of opening within the year.

In addition, to improve transfer convenience for Yangsan Line users, a new section connecting Yangsan Station on Busan Metro Line 2 to Yangsan Jungang Station on the Yangsan Line will be established, creating a transfer system that also links with Busan Metro Line 2.

In particular, the Yangsan Line project was carried out on the premise of integration with the existing urban railway network. It will serve as a key transportation axis connecting Busan and Yangsan into a single urban railway network, going beyond a simple addition of a new line.

This is expected to reduce discontinuities between lines, significantly improve citizen mobility, and contribute to the integration of living areas as well as the revitalization of economic and cultural exchanges between regions.

This agreement prioritizes citizen convenience by jointly organizing operational, financial, and transfer systems between Busan Metropolitan City and Yangsan City, thereby establishing a stable foundation for the opening. It is expected to become a meaningful achievement and a representative model in the field of metropolitan transportation operations.

Mayor Park Heong-joon stated, “The Yangsan Line urban railway is a key transportation infrastructure that effectively connects Busan and Yangsan into a single living area. This agreement is highly significant in that the two cities have laid the foundation for mutually beneficial development in the southeastern region through cooperation. We will continue to enhance citizen mobility and strengthen transportation connectivity and joint development in the southeastern region.”
