Convenience for All, Building a World of Hope Together: 2nd Accessibility Enhancement Day Commemorative Event Held

Busan Metropolitan City (Mayor Park Heong-joon) announced that today (April 28) at 10:30 a.m., at the Busan Station Eurasia Platform, a commemorative event under the theme "Convenience for All, Building a World of Hope Together" will be held to celebrate the 2nd Accessibility Enhancement Day.

The event is hosted and organized by the Busan Metropolitan Chapter of the Korea Association for Persons with Physical Disabilities (KAPPD), with support from Busan City.

Mayor Park Heong-joon, Hwang Jae-yeon (President of the KAPPD Central Headquarters), persons with disabilities, their families, and approximately 300 citizens are expected to attend.

In 2023, the National Assembly established Accessibility Enhancement Day by enacting the Act on Guarantee of Convenience Promotion for Persons with Disabilities, the Elderly, and Pregnant Women, designating April 10 each year to promote public awareness of accessibility facilities.

(Definition: Accessibility facilities refer to installations that facilitate mobility, facility use, and access to information for persons with disabilities, the elderly, and pregnant women.)

Event Composition

The commemorative event consists of:

• ○Hands-on experiences using wheelchairs, strollers, suitcases, and pregnancy simulation suits to navigate stairs and ramps

• ○Public quiz events related to accessibility

• ○Practical training sessions for architects and public officials responsible for accessibility facility management.

Meanwhile, to promote the mobility rights and convenience of persons with disabilities, Busan City is implementing initiatives such as:

• ●"Low-Floor Bus Experience Day (Bus with Friends Day)" – Held every Tuesday from April to December, offering 160 sessions for 480 participants, allowing persons with disabilities to experience and assess low-floor bus accessibility.

• ●"Barrier-Free City Tours and Bu-Ul-Gyeong Empathy Tours" – Starting in May, 12 sessions are scheduled where persons with disabilities and non-disabled volunteers will tour barrier-free tourist sites across Busan, Ulsan, and Gyeongnam together using the "Narae Bus."

Mayor Park Heong-joon stated,

"A city where people would want to be reborn must ensure that no one is marginalized and that all citizens can lead happy lives together.
Accessibility facilities are crucial not only for persons with disabilities but also for the comfort and convenience of everyone.
