The Busan Metropolitan City to Host the 17th Climate Change Week in Celebration of the 55th Earth Day

The Busan Metropolitan City (Mayor Park Heong-joon) announced that it will hold the 17th Climate Change Week from April 21 to 25 in celebration of the 55th Earth Day (April 22). Events will be held under the slogan “Take Climate Action! Live Adaptively!” to raise awareness of environmental protection and the importance of carbon neutrality.

What is Earth Day?
Earth Day was first established in 1970 following a major oil spill in California, USA, to promote global awareness of environmental protection. In South Korea, since 2009, the week surrounding April 22 has been designated Climate Change Week to promote the urgency of climate change and encourage low-carbon lifestyles.

Major events for 2025 include:

• ●Earth Day Commemoration Ceremony and Expert Lecture (April 22)

• ●Earth Day Lights-Out Event (April 22)

• ●Carbon Neutral Lifestyle Campaign at Busan Citizens Park (April 25)

April 22 – Earth Day Commemoration Ceremony
Held at 2:00 p.m. in the International Conference Hall on the 12th floor of Busan City Hall, this event will host around 200 participants including citizens, organizations, and public institutions.

The ceremony includes:

• ●Awards for 18 contributors to greenhouse gas reduction

• ●Recognition of 7 “Green Apartment” complexes

• ●A storytelling magic performance titled “The Magic of Zero Carbon”

• ●A keynote lecture by Professor Park Chang-hee (Kyungsung University) on “Walkable Cities and Citizen-Led Carbon Neutrality”

April 22, 8:00 p.m. – Earth Day Lights-Out Event
A 10-minute symbolic blackout will take place citywide. Participating sites include:

• ●Government offices such as Busan City Hall and Police Headquarters

• ●Iconic landmarks such as Busan Tower, Gwangandaegyo Bridge, Busanhangdaegyo Bridge, Nurimaru APEC House, Busan Cinema Center, and the Busan International Finance Center (BIFC)

April 25 – Carbon Neutral Campaign
At 10:00 a.m., Busan City and Busanjin District will jointly host a campaign in front of the Climate Crisis Clock at Busan Citizens Park.
The event will feature banners and interactive booths that promote everyday carbon reduction practices.

Lee Byung-seok, Director-General of the Environment and Water Policy Office of The Busan Metropolitan City, stated:
“We hope this year’s Climate Change Week helps build a shared understanding of carbon neutrality and encourages everyday action. We urge all citizens to actively participate, especially in the Earth Day Lights-Out event, even if it causes some minor inconvenience, in recognition of Earth Day’s importance.”
