Busan City Holds Training Session for Public Disinfection Response Teams and Community-Based Sanitation Groups

On April 11, at 2 p.m., the City of Busan (Mayor Park Heong-joon) conducted the “2025 Capacity Building and Safety Training for Public Disinfection Response Teams” at the City Hall main auditorium to prevent infectious and emerging diseases.

The training was attended by more than 400 disinfection-related personnel, including officials from 16 district and county public health centers, members of the rapid disinfection response teams, staff from 205 local administrative welfare centers, members of the community-based sanitation groups, and the Busan Chapter of the Korea Pest Control Association.

Experts from the Korea Disease Control and Prevention Agency (KDCA) and the Busan Chapter of the Korea Pest Control Association led the training under two main themes:

• ●“Mosquito Ecology and Eco-Friendly Control”

• ●“Safe Use of Disinfection Chemicals and Equipment.”

Lee Hee-il, Director of the Vector Analysis Division at KDCA, explained the topic of “Mosquito Ecology and Eco-Friendly Control,” covering mosquito-borne diseases, mosquito species, disinfection vs. pest control, vector-specific management, current domestic control efforts, and methods for managing vector habitats.

Lim Jae-ui, Deputy Director of the Busan Chapter of the Korea Pest Control Association, spoke on “Safe Use of Disinfection Chemicals and Equipment,” addressing accident prevention, types and properties of disinfection chemicals, proper handling methods, equipment usage, and protective gear protocols.

Due to climate change, the habitats and active periods of hygiene pests such as mosquitoes and ticks have expanded and advanced. As a result, Busan City is identifying high-risk areas for pest outbreaks and managing them intensively by employing pest control strategies tailored to each vector and location.

To prepare for the summer season, when vector activity is high due to rising temperatures, the city will implement a “Public-Private Joint Disinfection Day” involving both rapid response teams and community-based sanitation groups. The initiative will combine physical methods (such as habitat removal) and chemical treatments to ensure effective and environmentally friendly pest control.

Lee So-ra, Director of the Busan Citizens’ Health Bureau, stated:

“We expect this training will help public disinfection teams and citizen-led sanitation groups better understand vector-borne diseases and safely conduct preventive disinfection operations.
We also urge citizens to take precautions against exposure to pests, such as wearing light-colored long-sleeved clothing and using repellents when going outdoors.”
