With
this year marking both the 100th anniversary of Lee Jung-Seob's birth and the
60th anniversary of his death, the Busan Museum of Art is holding a major
exhibition to celebrate this beloved figure of Korean modern art from October
20 to February 26, 2017. The exhibition displays the largest gathering ever of
Lee’s works, which visitors can see him not only as an artist, but also as a
husband and a father, and as a human being through his paintings.
The
exhibition has a special meaning through its venue in Busan. Busan is where Lee
led his life as refugee alone from December 1951 to March 1953, separated from
his family when his wife and two sons went to live in Japan, during the
devastation of the Korean War (1950-53). He turns the longing for his family
and lonely life as a refugee into pursuit of art.
In
celebration of Lee Jung-Seob and his oeuvre, a retrospective that looks at the
life and artistic vision of the late artist has been put together. The exhibit
places visitors in the shoes of Lee who, despite destitute conditions and
mental illness, persevered with an undying passion right up until his last
breath at the age of 41 in 1956.
The
exhibition features about 200 works and about 100 other related materials,
loaned from 50 different institutions and collectors from around the world. The
displayed items include his representative oil paintings - including Bull,
Landscape of Yokjido, and Family on the Road - along with numerous examples of
Lee's drawings, tinfoil paintings, postcards, keepsakes, and other relevant
materials.
This
exhibition will be held from October 20, 2016 to February 26, 2017 at the Busan
Museum of Art. The admission fee for adults is 7,000 Korean Won; for children
and pre-university students 4,000 Korean Won; for children under the age of 7
and senior’s aged 65 and over it is free of charge.
