□ F1963 Garden in Suyeong-gu has been recognized by the Korea Forest Service as one of Korea’s Top 30 Private Gardens in 2026.
□ Korea’s Top 30 Private Gardens project celebrates exceptional private gardens across the country, showcases their beauty and the stories behind how they are cared for, and raises interest in private gardens and related cultural practices.
○ F1963 Garden is the only one to be listed in Busan.
□ Designated as Busan’s first private garden in December 2024, F1963 Garden is nestled within F1963, a versatile destination repurposed from a former wire factory established by Kiswire in 1963.
○ The name combines 1963, the year the factory was built, with the ‘F’ from ‘Factory.’
○ By pairing the original structures with greenery, F1963 Garden embraces both industrial heritage and nature.
□ F1963 Garden comprises several unique spaces that reflect the history and character of the site. A variety of vegetation, water elements, and resting amenities give each space its own distinctive landscape and atmosphere.
○ Sorigil is lined with bamboo whose straight yet flexible stalks recall the shape of wires. Recycled concrete from the existing floor preserves traces of the site’s past and allows industrial legacy and natural surroundings to interplay in both contrast and harmony with one another.
○ Dalbit Garden was reborn from a decommissioned wastewater treatment facility. Lotus flowers, garden plants, and a glass greenhouse come together to reinterpret F1963’s industrial identity.
○ Danpung Garden is a peaceful retreat where people can admire dense zelkova trees and autumn foliage in the heart of the city.
□ With F1963 Garden’s achievement in mind, Busan plans to enhance the value of privately maintained gardens and deepen appreciation for garden culture.
○ The city will foster the development of programs linking public gardens, such as Busan Nakdonggang Garden, with private gardens to expand opportunities for residents to enjoy gardens close to home and bolster cooperation with private garden operators as part of its efforts to position Busan as a garden city.
□ Mayor Chun Jae-soo noted, “F1963 Garden exemplifies the significance of private gardens and the potential of successful regeneration. We will remain committed to discovering outstanding private gardens and further strengthening the role of gardens in our city.”
