Foremost Climate Scientist Axel Timmermann Becomes Busan’s Newest Honorary Citizen

□ Busan Metropolitan City conferred honorary citizenship upon Germany’s Dr. Axel Timmermann, director of the IBS Center for Climate Physics and distinguished professor at Pusan National University.

○ In appreciation of his outstanding dedication to pioneering climate studies in Busan and mentoring the emerging generation of experts, the certificate was formally presented by Mayor Park Heong-joon on July 18, 2025, at 11:00 in Busan City Hall's State Chamber.

□ A preeminent authority in climate science, Dr. Timmermann is instrumental in shaping a leading research environment and raising Busan’s scientific standing to global prominence.

□ Since assuming his current posts in January 2017, Dr. Timmermann has conducted groundbreaking studies on climate change and sea level rise projections.

○ He has been named one of the world’s most influential researchers for seven consecutive years since 2018 and has authored more than 340 publications in prestigious journals.

○ In addition, he diligently cultivates an inquisitive environment and inspires young minds through public lectures both in Busan and nationwide.

□ Since 1966, Busan has awarded honorary citizenship to individuals who have contributed to its advancement and international reputation. To date, 282 people have been granted this distinction. Most recently, in May, Rear Admiral Neil Koprowski, Commander of U.S. Navy Region Korea, was recognized.

○ Other notable recipients include: ▲ Guus Hiddink (2003), former manager of the Korean national football team; ▲ Danielle Kang (2019), LPGA Tour golfer; and ▲ Darcy Paquet (2020), subtitle translator for the Oscar-winning film Parasite.

□ Mayor Park conveyed his congratulations: “I am glad to see cutting-edge climate research thriving in Busan. I hope you will continue to support the growth of local talent and higher education while fostering strong ties among academia, industry, and the wider community. It would be a great privilege to have you stay here with us longer as we strive to make Busan the heart of climate science.”
