□ The city of Busan announced that it was ranked 67th out of 270 global large cities, the first time it has made the list of the World’s Best Cities report. The 2024 edition was released by Resonance Consultancy, one of the world’s top consulting agencies.

□ The global consulting agency, centered on Canadian and American tourism, real estate, and economic development sectors, has been annually evaluating the environment and user evaluations of 270 large cities around the world (cities with over one million people) since 2016. After measuring cities’ livability, lovability, and prosperity, Resonance Consultancy selects 100 of the most ideal cities and announces them in its World’s Best Cities report.

○ The rankings are meaningful in that the selected cities go beyond livability and tourism attractions. Resonance Consultancy takes into account regular residents and those with business purposes and analyzes user reviews and major statistics from Google, Facebook, and Instagram.

○ The top three cities according to the report are London, UK followed by Paris, France and New York, USA. Seoul is ranked 10th, a 16-spot jump from 26th in last year’s report. Seoul was evaluated as a global leading city thanks to the influence of hallyu (Korean Wave).

□ For the first time, Busan made it on the list. The city came in at 67th, between Atlanta and Houston in the USA. Resonance Consultancy named Busan ‘the Miami of Korea’ and pointed out the city’s high prosperity level, low poverty rate, and high SNS hash tag (#) ratio.

○ The report showed enormous interest in the world’s first offshore smart city, OCEANIX Busan, introducing Busan as a rising bleisure (business+leisure) city, as well as the fourth largest container port in the world.

□ The announcement is a successive achievement, following its 6th-place finish in the Global Livability Index in Asia selected by the British Economist Intelligence Unit (EIU) and No. 1 in Korea and 15th in the world among 77 global cities in the Global Smart Centres Index (SCI) released by the global consulting agency Z/Yen. Consequently, Busan’s competitiveness as a global hub has been noticed worldwide.

□ Busan Mayor Park Heong-joon remarked, “I am very pleased that Busan was selected as one of the world’s best 100 cities desired by businessmen, tourists, and local residents. This follows high rankings in global livability and being a global smart city.” He added, “We in Busan will continue to endeavor to be reborn as a global hub gaining attention both domestically and internationally.”
