In the face of a massive outbreak of the dominant Omicron variant, children aged 5 to 11 years who are not eligible for vaccines have been closely linked to a fast-developing Omicron surge, driving up the number of critically ill patients and deaths. Therefore, Korea Disease Control and Prevention Agency (KDCA) provides guideline on COVID-19 vaccination for foreign children aged 5 to 11 years staying in the Republic of Korea.

Eligible Recipients

Foreign children aged 5 to 11 years staying in the Republic of Korea. It is highly recommended for children at high risk with underlying medical conditions to be vaccinated to prevent them from having severe symptoms.

Children at high risk include those with::

Chronic lung disease, Chronic heart disease, Chronic liver disease, Chronic kidney disease, Neuromuscular disease

Diabetes, Obesity, and those who are immunocompromised (user of immunosuppressive medications)

Children with chronic diseases staying in public facilities such as social welfare facilities to have treatment.

Vaccination is recommended for children aged 5 to 11 years with the above high risk medical conditions if their doctor advises them to be vaccinated.

In case of children in a good condition, please learn and review risks such as adverse reactions and benefits of vaccination before making the vaccine decision and have them vaccinated on a voluntary basis.

Vaccination is not recommended for children who have already had COVID-19 or have been infected with the virus after the first shot.

Vaccine Type and Interval between Vaccine Doses

The Pfizer COVID-19 vaccine will be provided for children aged 5 to 11 years (the dose is child-sized at the 1/3 volume of active ingredient in the adult vaccine)

A second dose will be given at the interval of eight weeks (56 days)

If a shorter interval is needed upon a medical or personal condition of the person being vaccinated, a second shot can be given to the person at the interval of three weeks (21 days), which is approved by the Ministry of Food and Drug Safety of Korea.
