The City of Busan and the Busan Transportation Corporation have decided that all metro (subway) passengers will be required to wear face masks in order to prevent the spread of COVID-19 starting May 27, 2020.

Under the new measure, conductors and security guards can refuse to allow passengers to board whose faces are not covered.

The city and the Busan Transportation Corporation have begun promoting the wearing of face masks on the metro, and as the result, most metro passengers already wear face masks while commuting.

However, as it gets more uncomfortable for passengers to wear face masks during the hotter months as well as the beginning of the phased reopening of schools, people need to be continuously reminded to wear face masks in public to prevent the spread of COVID-19.

For those metro passengers without face masks, mask vending machines will be installed at eight metro stations, including Busan Station, Seomyeon, Busan City Hall, Yeonsan, Dongnae, Suyeong, Deokcheon and Sasang in June, in addition to convenient stores within metro stations also selling masks.

Face masks have already become mandatory in taxis from March and on buses from May in Busan and drivers can refuse passengers whose faces are not covered.
