Busan City of Film
Designated UNESCO Creative City in 2014

The City of Busan received a “very satisfactory” evaluation from the UNESCO Creative Cities Network (UCCN). It is the first evaluation since Busan was designated as a City of Film in 2014.

As Asia’s first UNESCO Creative City of Film, Busan has hosted a variety of film festivals every year and introduced various films to both cinephiles and the general public from home and abroad by offering diversified events and programmes, along with film screenings. Busan was highly evaluated on all of the UCCN evaluation items, along with its achievements, which include a robust film industry centered around the Busan Film Commission, film related education targeting children to experts, international cooperation and active administrative support.

The 180 member cities of the UNESCO Creative Cities Network (UCCN) must submit membership monitoring reports every four years following the year of designation. The Steering Group assess the reports according to the monitoring guidelines and produces a short evaluation of each report, including a global appreciation score (a. very satisfactory; b. satisfactory; c. unsatisfactory).

The membership monitoring exercise aims to share information, monitor and evaluate the impact of the designations on the local and international levels, verify the steadfast commitment of the members of the network and assess trends in fostering the role of culture and creativity as enablers and drivers of the economic, social and environmental dimensions of sustainable urban development.

Upon final evaluation, the designation of being a member of the UCCN is further extended or possibly removed.
