Encountering Another Stranger
U.S. troops initially entered Korea to oversee Japan’s surrender and establish a military government, withdrawing after the South Korean government was formed in 1948. However, with the outbreak of the Korean War in 1950, Camp Hialeah was reestablished in Busan as a supply hub and command center for rear operations. The base maintained a long and complex presence in Busan until its closure in 2006.
