Welcome Message
At the height of resilience against national adversity,
Welcome to the
Provisional Capital
Memorial Hall
-
Launched on June 25, 1984, the Hall honors Busan’s pivotal role and historical importance as the Provisional Capital of the Republic of Korea during the Korean War, while also nurturing civic pride among citizens.
The Presidential Residence, originally the main structure within the complex, is a two-story brick building completed on August 10, 1926. It was initially built to serve as the official residence of the Gyeongsangnam-do Governor, following the provincial government's relocation from Jinju to Busan in 1925 under Japanese colonial rule. During the Korean War (1950–1953), when Busan functioned as the Provisional Capital of the Republic of Korea, the residence was used by the country’s first president, Rhee Syngman.
The Presidential Residence, recognized for its historical and architectural significance, was designated as National Historic Site No. 546 in November 2018. Celebrated for its serene atmosphere, the building is beautifully integrated with a carefully designed outdoor garden.

In order to authentically portray the political decision-making and diplomatic activities of Korea during the Korean War, the President’s Office and reception room have been meticulously recreated to capture the atmosphere of the time.
Furthermore, as it also serves as the residence of the President, the First Lady, and their staff, one can observe the simple and unpretentious daily life of the Presidential couple in areas such as the private chamber, living room, guest room, dining room, and kitchen.

On September 19, 2012, the former official residence of the Chief Prosecutor of the Busan High Prosecutors' Office, located behind the Presidential Residence, was fully renovated and reopend as a new exhibition hall after extensive renovations.
The Permanent Exhibition Hall, a brick structure with a basement and a ground floor, houses permant exhibition halls depicting the outbreak of the Korean War, the lives of refugees, and the political, economic, and cultural landscape of Busan during its time as the Provisional Capital.

We remain committed to continually acquiring new exhibition materials and expanding our facilities, faithfully fulfilling our role in highlighting Busan’s significance as the Provisional Capital of the Republic of Korea during the Korean War.
We look forward to the continued interest and support of the citizens. Thank you.
