Features and Changes - Annex Programs
The Annex Building, (formerly, Busan Modern & Contemporary History Museum), is a Western-style modern architectural structure built in 1929. During the Japanese colonial period, it served as the Busan branch of the Oriental Development Company. After Korea’s liberation, it functioned as the Busan American Council for nearly five decades, making it a symbolic site in Busan’s modern history.
In 1999, the building was returned to Korea and re-purposed as the Busan Modern History Museum. In 2017, the Busan Government announced plans to establish a museum complex encompassing both the Annex Building and the former Bank of Korea Busan Headquarters. Interior remodeling of the former Busan Modern History Museum began in March 2020, with spatial reconfiguration completed at the
end of December 2022.

The Annex Building functions as a cultural venue that integrates a library, archive, and exhibition space.
It is dedicated to
- Preserving and sharing Busan’s collective memory
- Gathering and cultivating knowledge and insight
- Offering diverse and engaging cultural experiences, serving as a community-driven space created in collaboration with residents.
