A Quiet Garden for Everyday Escapes

A cozy place for a slow, quiet stroll — where wildflowers bloom and nature gently surrounds you. Welcome to Sosopung Garden, Busan’s first designated Everyday Garden.

The transformation of DOMOHEON began with a pledge by Mayor Park Heong-joon to return the former mayoral residence to the citizens of Busan. In keeping with that promise, the city launched a full-scale renovation project guided by openness and accessibility. A central principle of the renovation was honoring the original structure while clearly distinguishing between preserved and newly added elements. DOMOHEON preserves the architectural integrity of the past while embracing contemporary and innovative changes — a vision that also shaped the surrounding landscape.

The very first change reveals itself as you make your way toward DOMOHEON. What was once an asphalt road for vehicles has been transformed into a scenic pedestrian pathway — one that enhances visitor safety while encouraging quiet appreciation of the surrounding natural beauty.

In front of the building, the former lawn has been reborn as Sosopung Garden — a name that means ‘a gentle, everyday picnic.’ Making use of the site’s natural slope, the garden was designed to feel both intimate and expansive, with subtle terracing and peaceful resting spots thoughtfully placed throughout.

An aging pond on the grounds has also been reimagined and expanded into an ecological water garden, now home to a diverse array of flora and fauna. This living ecosystem offers visitors a unique chance to engage with nature more closely and mindfully.

Perhaps the most symbolic transformation is found at the building’s entrance. The large canopy that once sheltered visiting dignitaries such as presidents and mayors has been removed. Its removal signals a clear departure from the site’s former sense of authority, opening the space to a new spirit of openness and hospitality.
