2024년 부산근현대역사관 본관 금고미술관 기획전 <원도심, 회상의 색채>展

언제부터인가 원도심은 “낡고 오래된 곳”으로 여겨지고 있다. 하지만 과연 그럴까? 이번 전시는 오늘날 우리가 마주하고 있는 원도심을 새로운 시각으로 바라보기 위한 일종의 실험이며, 획일화된 원도심의 이미지를 재창조하기 위한 과정이다. 전시에 참여하는 예술가들은 원도심 일대에서 저마다의 방식으로 예술 프로젝트를 진행한 경험이 있다. 그러나 이 전시는 회상을 통해 과거를 떠올리게 하는 전시가 아니라 과거를 담보하되 미래를 반영하는 현재의 가능성에 주목한다. 상호텍스트성에서도 알 수 있듯이 세상에 존재하는 모든 것은 과거에 이미 존재해 있던 것을 재조합해서 만들어진다. 다시 말해 새로움은 과거로부터 온다는 것이다.

기획전의 주제는 ‘회상의 색채’다. 따라서 이번 전시는 ‘색채’라는 개념에 주목한다. 일반적으로 색채라고 하면 특유의 ‘빛’이나 일정한 ‘경향이나 성질’을 이야기한다. 그러나 사람마다 바라보거나 인식하는 색채의 스펙트럼은 무한하고 그 가능성은 예측할 수 없다. 예술가 또한 예측할 수 없는 사건을 만들어 낸다. 시각예술은 흔히 눈에 보이는 것을 표현하는 것이 아니라 그 현상 너머에 있는 새로운 시선을 제시한다. 또한 심미적 체험을 가능하게 하고 그로 인해 삶의 또 다른 잠재성을 발견한다.

부산근현대역사관 금고미술관 개관전에서는 가장 가까운 역사를 반추해서 현재를 살펴보았다면, 개관 이후 첫 기획 전시에서는 과거와 현재를 고찰하여 미래의 가능성에 대해 질문하고자 한다. 《원도심, 회상의 색채》展은 과거의 기억이 현대적인 색채로 물들어지면서, 과거와 현재 그리고 미래를 아울러 생각해 볼 수 있는 계기가 될 것이라고 기대한다. 또한 오늘날 우리가 이해하고 있는 사전적 의미의 원도심에서 나아가 ‘원도심의 새로운 가능성은 무언인가? 이 물음에 대한 좌표가 될 것이라 본다.


Special Exhibition The Original City Center: The Color of Reminiscence

Though the origins of the preconception remain vague, original city centers have been regarded as “places that are antiquated and shabby.” But is this stereotype justified? This exhibition is an experiment of sorts designed to see the old city centers we encounter today from novel perspectives. It also encompasses the process of deconstructing and recreating their clichéd images. Each of the participating artists has experience conducting art projects in historic city centers in their respective ways. Yet, this exhibition is not one that recalls the past through reminiscence; instead, it focuses on the potential of a present that echoes the past while reflecting the future. As suggested in the concept of intertextuality, all things in the world are born out of the recombination of existing things. In other words, the new is born from what already exists.

The theme of this special exhibition is the “color of reminiscence.” As such, the exhibition pays close attention to the notion of “color.” When we talk about colors, we are generally talking about certain hues of “light” or certain “tendencies” and “characteristics.” Nevertheless, the spectrum of colors observed or perceived by each of us is endless and its potential, unpredictable. Artists, too, create events that are beyond prediction. Visual art, in particular, is not about expressing what we can normally see, but about transcending such phenomenon and providing fresh views on the same, thereby facilitating aesthetic experiences and leading us to discover life’s full potential.

Whereas the inaugural exhibition of the Vault Art Museum within the Busan Museum of Contemporary Art examined the present through ruminations on our recent history, this first special exhibition of the museum queries the potential of the future by surveying the past and the present. In this respect, The Original City Center: The Color of Reminiscence will tinge our memories of the past with the colors of the contemporary, providing an opportunity to recognize the past, present, and future as a single unitary whole. At the same time, the exhibition will go beyond the lexical definition of the original city center as we comprehend it today while serving as a frame of reference for the question “What is the novel potential of the original city center?”
