Facility Management Office for the Distribution of international Fisheries Products

Greetings from the Mayor of Busan,

Busan is a world-class marine and fisheries city that is well-equipped with a variety of marine and fisheries infrastructure, including the Busan International Fish Market and Advanced Seafood Processing Complex.

A marine cluster in Dongsam-dong, Yeongdo-gu includes the Korea Hydrographic and Oceanographic Agency, National Fishery Products Quality Management Service, and the Korea Institute of Ocean Science & Technology. Within the city, the National Fisheries Research & Development Institute, Korea Maritime and Ocean University, and Pukyong National University provide an abundance of manpower, expertise and research towards the development of effective fisheries policy.

Busan is located between the North and South Pacific fishing grounds, as well as in the center of Japan, China, Russia and Taiwan, who are the largest consumers of fisheries products in the world. To take advantage of its location, the city has created a cluster of fisheries distribution and processing companies, as well as refrigerated warehouses. Busan is not only a gateway for the export and import of fisheries products, but also a center for distribution.

With the aim of creating the largest international logistical fisheries trading platform, the Busan International Fish Market and the Advanced Seafood Processing Complex are equipped with state-of-the-art refrigeration and cold storage and processing facilities, along with a specialized port for deep-sea fishing. The market also welcomes a steady stream of visitors from home and abroad from such countries as Japan, China, and Russia.

Busan Metropolitan City is working hard towards establishing a cluster for Northeast Asia’s fisheries products, as well as preparing to take the next step forward in the industry. We are ready to become a world class marine and fisheries city, providing unlimited potential in the fisheries sector.

I sincerely would like to ask for your keen interest and continued support.

Thank you.

The wholesale market of the Busan International Fish Market (BIFM) opened in Gamcheon Port on September 18, 2008, and is the first and largest public wholesale fish market in Korea. The market is composed of 7 buildings, including a wholesale market with a floor space of 63,625㎡ and a 25,000 M/T capacity-refrigerated and cold storage warehouse equipped with freezing and de-icing facilities, as well as a pier where seventeen 300-ton ships and one 150-ton ship can berth at the same time.

In addition, its sophisticated facilities with automated logistics and computerized tracking systems, as well as a safe and fast operating system has resulted in reduced distribution costs and improved sanitary processing, enabling the market to provide high-quality fish products to customers.

Thanks to the efforts of the wholesale market cooperative and intermediary wholesalers, we have witnessed growth year after year by achieving a turnover of 266.4 billion won in 2018, and thus reached an annual turnover of over 250 billion won three years in a row. As well, the BIFM has been praised for its management and operation among fishery wholesale markets in Korea three years in a row.

We will not be complacent. We will do our best to make the market more dynamic and more competitive by actively adapting to the rapidly changing environment in the international fisheries market and seemingly limitless competition at home and abroad.

We will spare no effort to further develop the market and provide the best service possible to customers by strengthening the capabilities of market operators by modernizing facilities and offering high-quality products.

The Advanced Seafood Processing Complex was completed on February 21, 2014 as part of the project for establishing a trade base for the physical distribution of fisheries products with the goal of clustering small and medium-sized seafood processing companies to strengthen the global competitiveness of those companies through various functions and policies.

The main facilities of the complex have 56 processing plants and research support facilities, such as the extensive research center, design center, import & export information center, and an exhibition & PR room for products and other facilities, like the welfare building.

The complex has the following goals;

It aims to help companies in the complex improve their competitiveness and exporting capabilities through the construction of a production support system by making the complex a base for exporting processed products in Korea.

It will also help small and medium-sized seafood processing companies improve their marketing capabilities and allow for a large number of processed seafood exports.

In addition, it will be a total retail store for processed seafood, where all kinds of processed seafood will be available. It will also be equipped with hygienic food facilities that will allow it to grow into a mecca for low cost processed seafood, while offering high efficiency and value. Busan is located in the middle of northeast economic area of Asia and at the passage bridging the Pacific Rim and the Eurasian continent. Through the operation of the Busan International Fish Market and Advanced Seafood Processing Complex, Busan will lead us into a new era of the fisheries distribution and seafood processing industry.

I would like to ask for your continued interest and support.

Thank you
