Busan to Host the 2025 World Smart City Expo (WSCE)

Busan Metropolitan City (Mayor Park Heong-joon) announced that the 2025 World Smart City Expo (hereinafter “WSCE”), co-hosted by the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport (Minister Park Sang-woo) and the Ministry of Science and ICT (Minister Yoo Sang-wim), will be held over three days from July 15 to 17 at BEXCO in Busan.

Since its inception in 2017, WSCE has grown into the Asia-Pacific region’s leading smart city exhibition. Now in its ninth year, the event brings together major domestic and international governments, cities, companies, experts, and citizens to explore sustainable urban solutions and ways to improve quality of life.

In December 2024, the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport held a call for host cities and convention centers nationwide. Busan Metropolitan City and BEXCO were ultimately selected, recognized for their strong hosting intent and excellent infrastructure. Various programs are being prepared to allow domestic and international visitors to fully experience the charm of Busan.

This year’s expo, under the slogan “Next City For All,” will unveil innovative technologies and services in the smart city sector and support corporate business efforts. Additionally, it will host a wide range of conferences involving academia, industry, research, and government. Particularly noteworthy is the confirmed participation of major corporations such as Korean Air and KT, and local governments including Incheon Metropolitan City, Ulsan Metropolitan City, and Sejong Special Self-Governing City, each with their own exhibition booths.

Korean Air plans to showcase:

• ●“ACROSS (Air Control And Routing Orchestrated Skyway System),” an integrated urban air mobility (UAM) management and operations control system for low-altitude aircraft such as drones and helicopters, and

• ●a demonstration of autonomous swarm drone flights.

KT will introduce:

• ●“EL SAR,” a 5G-based precise positioning technology, and

• ●AI and cloud-based solutions such as an intelligent CCTV video analysis solution as part of its smart safety portfolio.

In collaboration with K-water, Busan Metropolitan City will create a themed zone centered on the Busan Eco Delta Smart City National Pilot Project. The “Busan Pavilion” will promote key initiatives such as the Smart City Lab currently being developed in “Smart City Busan,” and showcase visions for smart city projects to be expanded across the city in the future.

Mayor Park Heong-joon stated, “I hope this expo becomes a valuable opportunity to open new markets for cutting-edge technologies in the smart city industry and to effectively promote government and municipal smart city initiatives to the public.”
